Why we exist
Despite that prostate cancer only afflicts men, it is the number one newly diagnosed cancer in Victoria and this incidence is forecast to continue to grow in the future.
Now responsible for 29% of all cancers in men, prostate cancer is the third-ranking cause of cancer deaths in Victoria and the second ranking cause of cancer death for men.
The incidence and trend data are mirrored throughout the Western world, underscoring a huge unmet need for new therapies and treatments for this disease. Currently, there are only a few research groups in Victoria focused on prostate cancer research and there is no nationally funded program to coordinate and enhance discoveries in the field.
Prostate cancer is a health, social and economic problem. Prostate cancer not only affects the men who contract the disease, but it has a big impact on their partners, families and the whole community.
The VPCRC exists to coordinate funding and research into understanding prostate cancer, with an overall view to improve patient outcomes and wellbeing.
Now responsible for 29% of all cancers in men, prostate cancer is the
